Has Dexter (the show, not the character) gone bad?

Some TV shows would be better if their creators had a predetermined number of seasons with which to work. Think of ABC’s Lost. How much better would that show have been if its writers hadn’t stretched its central mystery out to insane lengths. Think also of HBO’s The Wire, which I believe is the best cop drama I’ve ever watched. Its creators had a clear plan in mind from the beginning: The show would end its run after its fifth episode. That’s what happened, and the show was better for it.

Sometimes I wonder if Showtime’s Dexter wouldn’t benefit from this same kind of planning. Sometimes, while watching Season 3, I wonder if the show hasn’t already lost some of its spark.

You can read a good column about this here.  The writer, from the Tulsa World Web site, covers several shows that he thinks started out great but then lost their way. Included in his list is Dexter. The writer, like many others, isn’t a big fan of Jimmy Smits’ character, and the relationship he has with Dexter. I, too, have found this relationship, so central to Season 3, to be troubling. It’s caused Dexter to act so frequently out of character.

Will there be a Season 4 of Dexter? Probably. The ratings are still strong, and Michael C. Hall’s Dexter character is one of the most popular on the tube these days. Let’s hope, though, that the show hasn’t already lost its way.
